Jannik Sinner ends Novak Djokovic’s 19-match winning streak with victory at Nitto ATP Finals

Jannik Sinner ends Novak Djokovic’s 19-match winning streak with victory at Nitto ATP Finals.

Sinner puts an end to Novak Djokovic's 19-match winning streak with a triumph at the ATP Finals. Sinner battled past Djokovic in a three-set epic, securing his first career victory over the 24-time Grand Slam champion.

In an absolute epic at the ATP Finals, 22-year-old Jannik Sinner defeated Novak Djokovic 7-5, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (2), marking his first career win against the 24-time Grand Slam champion and current world No. 1. Sinner becomes the first player to defeat Djokovic in 121 days, since Carlos Alcaraz beat him in a five-set epic in the Wimbledon final. Djokovic had won his last 19 matches in a row since then.

Sinner's exceptional performance concluded Djokovic's winning streak in a three-hour, eight-minute victory, marking his first win in four career meetings with the six-time ATP Finals champion. Notably, it was his second career win over a reigning No. 1, with the first being against a No. 1-ranked Alcaraz in the semifinals of Miami earlier this year.

Reflecting on his win in front of his home crowd in Turin, Sinner expressed, 'It means a lot to me. When you win against the world No. 1 who has won 24 Grand Slams, it’s obviously at the top, top.'

Sinner's recent success includes victories in his last five matches against Top 5 players. His winning streak against Top 5 players includes triumphs over No. 2 Alcaraz, No. 3 Medvedev (twice), No. 5 Rublev, and No. 1 Djokovic in the ATP Finals round-robin.

With a 2-0 record in their round-robin group, Sinner defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in his first round-robin match, but no one from the group has qualified for the semifinals yet. The qualification outcome will depend on Thursday’s matches between Sinner and Holger Rune and Djokovic and first alternate Hubert Hurkacz.

During the intense battle against Djokovic, Sinner recorded 39 winners to 33 unforced errors in the three-hour, eight-minute encounter. Both players won exactly 109 points each, with only three breaks of serve in the entire match. Sinner clinched a late break at 5-all to take the first set, and both players traded breaks midway through the third set. In the third set tie-break, Sinner dominated, securing a 5-0 lead and never looking back.

Despite Djokovic finishing the match with a better winners-to-unforced errors differential of +16 (42 to 26), Sinner remained positive at +6 (39 to 33). Both players showcased powerful serving, with Djokovic finishing with 20 aces to just one double fault, and Sinner firing 15 aces to just two double faults.

Sinner's victories over Djokovic, Alcaraz, and Medvedev make him the only player this year to achieve such wins against the current Top 3 on the ATP rankings. He has beaten Alcaraz and Medvedev twice each in 2023. The Italian is currently ranked right behind them at No. 4.
